A class at the Health and Social Care Programme have been watching a documentary about the life of a woman with Downs syndrome, "Martina". The course is in Special pedagogy. After the film the students discussed different aspects of integration, attitudes, ethics and self-determination in relation to persons with functional imparements.

  1. Is watching film a common and integrated part of the education?

  2. Some of the teachers at the programme often use film, and even fiction, in their classes, and some do very rarely. I think it is important to "work with the film", give out questions or topics for discussion afterwards, for exemple.

  3. Did the teacher find out the questions or topics by her/him self?

  4. Actually, this teacher did not give the students specific questions or topics to discuss ( which I think would have been good so they could focus on important issues). Instead she let them talk about their experience of the film more freely. She did ask questions about the topics I mentioned, but the students could have been more prepared... It´s a chance for the students to practise reflektion, and if you know what to think about before you watch the film it is easier, I think.

  5. I think that it is difficult to not have issues to work with. Young people may not have so much experience of substance to discuss
